School Rules Introduction The school is run on the principal rule that students should conduct themselves in such a way that they show consideration for others. Students are expected to exhibit a high standard of personal behaviour and to work to the best of their abilities at all times. The School Code of Conduct covers general principles concerning attitudes and behaviour and there are specific rules which cover specific circumstances. Code Of Conduct At Walmer Science College, we want to be able to: · Be confident that our school is a safe and happy place. · Enjoy freedom from bullying. · Work without being disturbed. · See good behaviour rewarded and anti-social behaviour punished. At Walmer Science College, we will: · Work to the best of our ability, encouraging one another to do the same. · Take pride in ourselves and be loyal to the school. · Take responsibility for our own behaviour and actions. · Be tolerant of other people's views, treating them and their property with respect. · Share responsibility with each other for maintaining a healthy and tidy environment. School Anti Bullying Policy Walmer Science College actively promotes a school ethos that supports non-aggressive, considerate behaviour. We aim to provide a safe environment for all our students so that learning can take place in an emotionally relaxed and secure atmosphere. If bullying does occur, students should feel able to say so and know that they will be supported by the whole school community. A school anti-bullying policy is actively promoted and pursued. School Rules The following are rules which cover specific circumstances: 1. Attendance (a) All students must attend regularly and punctually in appropriate dress with all the necessary equipment. School hours are from 8.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. (b) Equipment. Equipment includes P.E. kit, towel and books and writing equipment for lessons. Any loss or defacing of school books or property must be made good. (c) Appropriate dress is school uniform. A School Uniform/P.E. kit list can be found here. Boots, large-buckled or studded belts and watch-straps, earrings and other ornaments, which might be a danger to the wearer or a threat to other students, are not reasonable. Students may wear one stud in each ear where ears have been pierced. No rings or make-up are allowed. Outlandish hairstyles are not permitted. Students are not permitted to wear hooded jumpers or baseball caps in school or on their journey to and from school. (d) Absence, Truancy and Lateness. Parents are requested to send notes with a student on the first morning following an absence and to telephone the school after 8.30 a.m. at the beginning of a period of illness. A register is called at the beginning of every lesson - any student absent without a valid excuse will be deemed to be truanting and will be kept in at specified times to make up the work that has been missed. Students who are late without excuse will be kept in for each such lateness. (e) Visits to doctor, dentist, etc. Students will show appointment cards, or a letter from a parent, to the teacher who would normally be taking the student for that lesson. Anyone leaving the premises should 'book out' at Reception and 'book in' on their return. (f) Family Holidays in Term Time. Students' absence during term time can seriously disrupt their continuity of learning. Not only do they miss the teaching provided on the days they are away, they are also less prepared for lessons after their return. This can create the risk of poor results. It is particularly important that students are not absent during the run up to SATs or examinations at 16+. Such absence would mean that they would not be assessed and this could affect their progress. A school calendar is provided at the beginning of the academic year to assist parents. Any parent who wishes to take their child away from school on a family holiday for up to two weeks (10 school days), needs to ask the school to approve the absence at least two weeks in advance. Please avoid taking students out of school for a family holiday if possible. Schools have the power to grant leave of absence but do not have to agree to this. We cannot legally authorise more than ten days unless there are really exceptional circumstances. All requests for holiday leave will be considered individually and will be agreed if there is good reason. The most important consideration is the effect the absence would have on the student's education. 2. Entrance to school. Entrance to the school is via the double gates and side-doors, except for 11th Year Prefects and Sixth Formers who may use the front doors. On fine days everyone should be out of doors during breaks. 3. Cycles Cycling is forbidden inside the school grounds. Cycles must be in a roadworthy condition and should be locked up and kept only in the cycle sheds. It is strongly recommended that students wear cycle helmets on their journey to and from school. 4. Movement about the School Should be in single file on the left-hand side of corridors and staircases. Bags are not to be worn on shoulders in the corridor. A one-way system operates during certain periods of the school day to allow safe and orderly movement around the site. Paths must be used outside the school buildings. 5. Bounds There are areas around the school where students are forbidden to go, eg down the 'dip' or behind the Performing Arts Centre. The fields are not to be used for recreation periods during the winter months or during wet weather. Students in years 7-11 should remain on school premises during both mid-morning break and lunch break. Students will only be permitted to leave the premises during lunch break if they have written consent from their parents/carers in agreement with the Key Stage Director. This privilege will be withdrawn if students do not conduct themselves in a responsible manner. 6. Personal Property Property should all be clearly marked with the owner's name. Valuables and large sums of money should not be brought to school. In exceptional circumstances they should be handed to a teacher or the school secretary for safe-keeping. 7. School Property Breakages and other damage should be reported immediately to the teacher or mid-day supervisor on duty. Students will be held responsible for costs incurred due to non-accidental damage. 8. General Conduct (a) Smoking and the chewing of gum are forbidden. (b) Students are expected to be courteous at all times. Infringement of these rules will be punished by one or more periods of detention which will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m. Minor infringement of the Code of Conduct may result in a half hour detention at lunch time. Tippex, permanent marker pens, personal stereos and tape recorders and similar items must not be brought to school. 9. Mobile Phones Large numbers of students now possess their own mobile phones which are an important and useful part of our modern way of life, enabling effective communication, access to information and personal safety. We believe that it is our responsibility as a school to teach young people to use this new technology in a responsible, safe and considerate manner, and the following guidelines are intended to promote such use. Students who bring mobile phones to school do so at their own risk and are responsible for their safe-keeping. They should always be kept in their personal possession out of sight throughout the day, unless handed in to the school office. It is strongly recommended that they are included in parents' personal possessions insurance policy. Parents and students should be aware of the health risks associated with the use of mobile phones and of the advice of the UK Chief Medical Officer that children and young people, who are more vulnerable to these health risks, should be encouraged to: (a) Use mobile phones for essential purposes only (b) Keep all calls short. Students should be aware that talking on a mobile phone can be an intrusion into the peace and privacy of other people. For that reason, they should only be used at times and in places which show consideration for others. Mobile telephones must not be switched on during lesson times. The staff have been authorised to remove mobile phones that are being used in a way contrary to these guidelines. They will then be returned at the end of the day, but may not be brought to school again. There is a public telephone available for students' use in school. |
