News Two become One ![]() Walmer Science College and Castle Community College to merge sixth forms. Walmer Science College and Castle Community College have announced plans to join their sixth forms and will begin recruitment from September 2008. The decision was made to allow greater diversity in subjects on offer. A combination of the subjects already available at both schools will allow students a much greater choice. Students will be asked to choose a name and design a logo to encapsulate the feel of the new sixth form. The students will then decide the entrants to be shortlisted and the Headteachers and Governors will chose the winning name and design. Andrew Milliken, Director of post 16 Education says: “It’s a very exciting development for young people in Walmer and Deal. I believe it will offer students more opportunity and a wider choice of options to help them to maximise their potential.” Back To Top Greater Opportunities and Better Prospects ![]() With a quarter of a million pound injection to ICT facilities, students at Walmer Science College have a lot to be excited about. Since the arrival of new headteacher Simon Heaton in September 2006, Walmer Science College has striven to provide students with a greater range of courses, a more productive school day and the latest in industry technology. The students, a year on, have now just benefited from a quarter of a million pounds ICT investment, which has granted a much richer learning environment from which teachers are already noticing the effects. The music department has introduced the children to an advanced music programme called Sibelus that enables the students to score write and compose their own music electronically- made possible because of the school’s investment in improved software. The drama department now enjoys cinematic ratio with an interactive wide screen television for thorough analysis and a new editing computer- the same as used in the industry- which will keep students at the forefront of developments plus investment in new cameras. In addition to all this, 2 new ICT rooms and additional computers in the Learning Resource Centre have been added to support teaching and learning. Head of drama, Mr Garner says: “We want to equip students with the ability to use the latest in technological advancements and provide them with the skills and expertise to step straight into their chosen careers.” Over two thirds of the classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. These can act as an ordinary whiteboard, a projector screen, an electronic copy board or as a computer projector screen on which the computer image can be controlled by touching or writing on the surface of the panel, instead of using a mouse or keyboard. Geography teacher, Mr Butcher says of the interactive whiteboards: “They make the subject come alive.” Back To Top WALMER SCIENCE COLLEGE STUDENTS GAIN DUKE OF EDINBURGH ![]() An impressive 18 students at Walmer Science College have just been awarded the Duke of Edinburgh award in Bronze. To be awarded a Duke of Edinburgh award, students must complete three full days of activities. This year, the Walmer school students had to complete focused training and first aid training before planning their own route from the start point, Swattenden Centre in Cranbrook. They had to navigate their way to the designated camp site and then follow the route back the following day. They were also asked to plan nutritious menus and complete detailed route plans to help guide them including gradient information, measurements, journey times and route descriptions. By participating in the Duke of Edinburgh awards (awarded in bronze, silver and gold) students have the opportunity to work directly for the local community, The Walmer students are currently working with Lifeboat, nursing homes and local charity shops. To complete the Award students must also participate in 3 other sections: Skill, Physical Recreation and Service, such as cookery, dance, football, DIY, course in first aid, fire and safety and teaching. Eighteen Walmer Science College students will be awarded the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award at a ceremony in November. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is widely recognized by employers and people involved in education. The Government has recognized that the Award has a valuable role to play within a young person’s personal development and is closely linked with many Government initiatives, including Connexions and the drive for Active Citizenship. Emma Geldart, teacher and leader of Duke of Edinburgh awards at Walmer Schools says; Participating in an Award is an excellent way for young people to have a great time with their friends, make new friends and do something highly rewarding with very real long-term benefits. Eighteen students will be awarded the bronze award. The award ceremony for the White Cliff Panel (which includes all the units in Dover, Deal & Sandwich) is taking place on November 30th at Dover College. The students receiving awards are: Jade Barratt, Gavin Greig, Tom Daniel, Liam Mockeridge, Aimee Lawrence, Sam Todd, Joe Wright, Saira Erskine, Bethany Harris, Alex Diamond, Chrostopher Dale, James Cooper, Josh Garner, Chloe-Anne Nichol, Melissa Jenkinson, Tom Porter, Authun Nicholls, Sam Cook.
